Community Gardens at Housing Neighborhoods

Together with members of the Food Access Advisory Committee, we established and support community gardens at 11 low-income housing communities throughout Northampton and Florence. Over 250 residents who are at risk to experience food insecurity receive and provide mentorship and resources to grow the organic foods they want to eat. Launched with ARPA funds from the City of Northampton and sustained by additional funding sources, the community garden project provides gardeners with:

  • Community sheds, tools, hoses, and wheelbarrows
  • Over 4,000 preferred and culturally relevant seedlings each year
  • Educational workshops and community events
  • Accessible garden beds for gardeners with limited mobility or other disabilities

“Growing our own food is lifesaving. It’s like getting outside in the sun; it gives a kind of energy you can’t get anywhere else. It means I can grow herbs from my culture.”
