Migration & Belonging: Basketmaking with Roundleaf Bittersweet

September 20 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Join us for the next gathering in our 2026 Migration & Belonging series.

In April, we harvested roundleaf bittersweet from the community farm hedgerows. In September, we will learn how to shape them into baskets! We will explore what can emerge when a plant usually treated as unwanted or out of place becomes a material for making and learning. As we weave, we will continue our conversations about the friendships we build with humans and more-than-humans.

We will also discuss themes related to migration: colonial histories entwined in the intentional movement of certain plants around the globe, legacy impacts on local ecological communities, and responsibilities as stewards where we find ourselves today.

No previous basket-making experience, or participation in the April harvest, is necessary.

Please bring, if you can: clippers or pruning shears, a water bottle, sun protection such as a hat, and a snack to share. It takes about 4 hours to make a basket, but participants can join for a shorter amount of time if necessary!

Register here and please make a donation of any amount to the Western Mass Asylum Support Network in lieu of a ticket fee.
