August 1st- a new month- and our 15th Tuesday Market of the year! It’s the perfect mid-point in our season of 29 markets, the true heart of the season.
Husk Cherries arrive at Tuesday Market this week! Red Fire Farm’s Harvest Manager Ali describes them as, “tiny sweet tomatillos that taste like pineapples and magic.”
Apex Orchard returns this week! They’ll have peaches, plums, blueberries and some Lodi apples. It’s just the beginning for Apex who reports that they have a “plentiful crop” of peaches coming along and many varieties of apples will follow in the coming weeks. Cool off in the shade with a peach or a plum! Get even cooler with some iced tea from Beets and Barley or Sweet Birch Herbals. Or go for the coldest option, a popsicle from Crooked Stick Pops! Did you know that Paul peddles the pop-cycle to market from Easthampton each week? Help make his load lighter at the end of the night!
Last week’s market was momentous because it marked the day when the majority of our fruit and vegetable vendors were able to process Massachusetts’ new SNAP benefit, HIP (Healthy Incentives Program) at their individual stalls. Customers were delighted to be able to use this additional food benefit ($40-$80/ month) at Tuesday Market! The mission of HIP is to make healthy local food available for low-income individuals and families and we’re off to a great start at Tuesday Market in accomplishing that goal!
The following farms are currently processing HIP at Tuesday Market: Crabapple Farm, Wingate Farm, Red Fire Farm, Old Friends Farm, Hart Farm and Park Hill Orchard (not at the market this week- back on 8/8). Stop by the purple market tent to learn more! If you know someone who receives SNAP benefits, make sure they’re in the know- tell them about HIP!
