Tuesday Market for May 9, 2017!

A small amount of asparagus arrived at market last week and quickly disappeared. Lots more will be on the scene this week but it’s still a good idea to get there early to grab some!

Other spring crops making their way to market now are: rhubarb, green garlic, pea shoots, ramps, fiddleheads, nettles, lettuce mixes and so much more! Looking for recipes? Ask the farmer you’re buying from! Or stop by the purple market tent, we love chatting about recipes!

This is a perfect week to start buying plants for your garden! The market will be loaded with healthy plant starts this week! We’re happy to welcome back Bare Roots Farm from Worthington, who will be bringing a huge variety of plant starts.

This Sunday is Mother’s Day! Tuesday Market is full of wonderful treats for your mom or the mother figure in your life. And if you are a mom, treat yourself!

Some ideas are- Body products at Sweet Birch Herbals, teas and tinctures at Sawmill Herb Farm, ginger syrup or turmeric honey at Old Friends Farm, maple treats at Justamere Tree Farm or flowers all around the market. Can’t decide? Tuesday Market tokens make a great gift!

New this year, Beets & Barley Catering is popping local popcorn! Grab an easy snack and spice it up with some mixed herbs, hot pepper or nutritional yeast!

Need a little  something more? This week’s special pizza at Laughing Tomato is The Hawaii Five- O- red sauce, fresh mozzarella, shredded mozzarella, bits of pineapple, jalapeno, speck and drizzled with Mike’s Hot Honey. Spice up your day! Or create your own pizza as always.

Other ready-to-eat options this week are popsicles from Crooked Stick Pops (they’re at market every week this year!), grilled cheese sandwiches at Cricket Creek Farm or baked goods at Tart.

THANK YOU to ALL who who gave to Grow Food Northampton last Tuesday on Valley Gives Day! It was fun having GFN board members and staff on site for the afternoon. When all was said and done, we raised just over $16,000!
This money will help support several Food Access and Education Programs including our SNAP matching at Tuesday Market. We’re helping to make shopping at the farmers’ market affordable for those receiving SNAP benefits.
Tuesday Market accepts SNAP benefits and will be matching SNAP purchases up to $10 for the first 6 markets of the season. During those 6 weeks, Grow Food Northampton and Tuesday Market will work to educate SNAP customers about the new Healthy Incentives Program (HIP) and how to best utilize it.
HIP is a three-year program which will match SNAP recipients’ purchases of local fruits and vegetables at participating farmers’ markets, mobile markets, farms stands, and CSAs. The HIP benefit will provide $40-$80 per month to SNAP users, depending on household size. Customers can learn more about this exciting new local food benefit by stopping by the purple market tent at Tuesday Market or by clicking HERE
