Migration and Belonging: Harvesting Itadori (Knotweed)

Join us for an afternoon of harvesting, tasting and storytelling with itadori (knotweed) along the Capawonganik (Mill River) at the Grow Food Northampton Community Farm. We will be led by GFN Farm Manager Piyush Labhsetwar, as well as Efadul Huq and JuPong Lin in learning about and harvesting this plant.
Often treated only as an “invasive” plant, itadori invites us to think differently about migration, belonging, ecology, and kinship. Together we will harvest young shoots, share recipes, and reflect on our own stories of movement, place, and entanglement.
And, as anti-immigrant violence intensifies around us, this year’s gathering hand harvest also extends into solidarity. Later this summer, we will fundraise for immigrant justice through the Pioneer Valley Workers Center by selling food items made from harvested itadori.
Meet by the pavilion and we will walk to the river together!
