Harvesting Knotweed: Migration and Belonging

Join us in harvesting, remembering, and learning with Itadori (Japanese) Knotweed on the banks of the Capawonganik (mill) river on our community farm at Grow Food Northampton. We will get entangled with knotweed by sharing our own complex stories of migration and belonging.
During last year’s harvest, we played along the river bank and lovingly named Knotweed as Twist n Pop, among other names. Young stalks of Twist n Pop are edible with a tart taste, similar to asparagus’ texture and rhubarb’s taste.
We will harvest emerging stalks of Twist n Pop and talk about this relatively new migrant to Turtle Island (North America), its role in our ecology, its journey within current anti-migrant rhetoric, and how we could build different relationships with it.
Come share your stories with Twist n Pop! We will also have Twist n Pop recipes for you to try. Gather by the garden shed and we will walk over to the river. Please wear good shoes.
