This week’s Grow Food Kids activity:

Let’s grow carrot tops! Carrot tops make pretty plants for a sunny window and their fern-like foliage will eventually bloom white lace-like flowers.

Growing Carrot Tops

  1. Cut the top from a carrot. You’ll need about one inch of the root part (the widest part of the carrot).
  2. Stick a toothpick into both sides of the carrot piece and balance it on top of a small glass.
  3. Fill the glass with water up to and barely touching the bottom edge of your carrot top. Set the glass in a light, but not sunny window.
  4. Add water as needed to keep it touching the edge of your carrot and watch the roots sprout.

You are growing the carrot plant from a carrot top, not the vegetable. Carrots are a taproot and once it is removed from the plant, it can’t regrow, unlike a potato.
